The event started as the Mnet KM Music Video Festival in 1999 as the country’s first video awards ceremony, and was renamed MAMA in 2009. It has grown to become Asia’s largest music awards show, promoting K-pop in various venues across the continent including Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong.
