Blackpink was named Entertainer of the Year by Time Magazine.
Their highly anticipated second studio album, Born Pink, was released in September and has sold more than 2 million copies, setting a record for the best-selling album by a Korean girl group. The LP was the first record to top the Billboard 200 and the official UK charts, a first for an Asian musician.
The magazine wrote that the key to the quartet’s “success as the world’s biggest girl group” was “making the members become solo stars in their own right”.
The quartet has achieved success not only in music, but also in fashion and on-screen, citing John Janick, chief executive and chairman of Interscope, YG Entertainment’s partner in leading the group’s operations outside of Asia. “They’re all four stars in their own way,” Janick is quoted as saying.
