South Korea’s K-pop album sales are approaching the 80 million milestone in 2022, a major music chart released on Dec 24, 2022, Saturday showed, thanks to strong performances by boy group BTS and pop girl groups.
Annual sales of the top 400 K-pop albums totaled 74.2 million units as of Dec. 10, 2022, up 29.9 percent from a year earlier, according to the country’s Benchmark Circle Chart.
K-pop supergroup BTS sold 6.07 million physical copies during the period, driving total non-EP sales.
The jump in girl group album sales this year is also outstanding.
According to Circle Chart, female singers will account for 32.6 percent of all K-pop physical sales in 2022, up 16.5 percentage points from the previous year.
On the other hand, the proportion of male singers dropped by 17.3 percentage points to 66.2 percent in 2022 the Chart reported.
